Indexing Society of Canada announces 2019 Tamarack Award recipient

Toronto: The Indexing Society of Canada / Société canadienne d’indexation (ISC/SCI) is pleased to announce the 2019 recipient of the Tamarack Award. Stephen Ullstrom (Edmonton) is being recognized for his contribution and commitment to the society.

Stephen was chosen due to his dedication and valuable input on the executive committee, and for his commitment as the Prairies and Northern Canada regional representative for the past two years and to remain as a representative for additional time.

“We are thrilled to present this award to Stephen, and we are honoured to have him as a member of our society,” said Alexandra Peace, President and Margaret de Boer, Past-President. “Thank you, Stephen, for all you have given to the society and its membership.”

Stephen is also being commended for his strong vision for a mentorship program for the society and for bringing it to fruition.

“Stephen was the driving force behind the mentorship program,” said Pierre Joyal, Vice-President. “He was its initial sponsor, the originator of the concept and saw it to fruition. It would not have happened without his commitment and dedication, his work efforts and determination to seeing it through. We are grateful for the work he accomplished and congratulate him on a well-deserved award.”

Indexing Society of Canada announces new Executive for 2019–2021

Toronto: The Indexing Society of Canada / Société canadienne d’indexation (ISC/SCI) is pleased to announce that, as of June 2019, the new President is Alexandra Peace and the new Vice-President is Pierre Joyal.

They will be holding these positions until June 2021.

Special Projects has been busy and we’re ready for more

The ISC/SCI has, over the years, accumulated surplus funds. Some of these funds will be kept aside as a reserve in case of deficit. That still leaves some extra funds that we can spend.

The Special Projects Committee was formed in 2017 to assess projects for ISC/SCI to spend money on. The committee sent out a request for proposals and received several interesting ideas and comments that were gratefully received.

[restrict]The committee researched one idea—a bursary for a structurally disadvantaged person that would monetarily help with an indexing course, a mentorship, and membership fees. At the last executive committee meeting, Special Projects presented their research and made a recommendation that the ISC/SCI spend money on this project. The recommendation was discussed, accepted, and passed on to the Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity committee for further research and execution.

The Inclusion, Diversity and Equity committee (TIDE) is looking for a few people to help develop and administer the bursary. If you are interested please contact Siusan Moffat.

We are now considering which idea to research next and we’re interested in your input. While we have some ideas in the bank, we would also like to invite you, the members, to submit any ideas you might have that would benefit the membership. Please send an email with your idea and how it might benefit the members to the Special Projects Committee.

Applications are Open for the Mary Newberry Mentorship Program!

Stephen Ullstrom and Linda Christian, coordinators for the program, are excited to announce that the Mary Newberry Mentorship Program is now open to receive applications.

As announced at the ISC/SCI AGM in June 2018, this is a new initiative to help both new and mature indexers develop their skills and businesses, to promote excellence in indexing, and to foster relationships within the society.

This is also our first call for applications.

A few points to note:

  • Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and will be treated on a first-come-first-serve basis. So get your applications in early.
  • We will do our best to find an appropriate mentor, though we cannot guarantee a match or that a mentor will be available right away. We will reply within 30 days, at the latest, about the status of your application and whether we have been able to find a mentor.
  • As this will be the first cohort, we will be capping the number of concurrent mentorships at six. This cap may change in the future as the program progresses.
  • More information about the program is available at www.indexers.ca/mentorship.
  • To apply, please fill out and submit the application form and the career development exercise to mentorship@indexers.ca. The forms are also available at www.indexers.ca/mentorship.
  • Mentees accepted into the program will pay a $100 fee. This will be due after the mentee has been matched with a mentor.

ISC/SCI announces mentorship program for indexers

The Indexing Society of Canada / Société canadienne d’indexation (ISC/SCI) is excited to announce the development of the Mary Newberry Mentorship Program.

The voluntary program will assist new indexers who wish to develop their skills and business. Mature indexers will also use the program to develop expertise in new disciplines and skills.

The program framework was announced at the ISC/SCI 2018 Annual Conference in Winnipeg in June. Stephen Ullstrom, chair of the program committee, and Linda Christian have been named the program’s first coordinators. They plan to have it running by January 2019.

Ullstrom, who is also the regional representative for the Prairies and Northern Canada, points out that most indexers are freelancers, and they could live almost anywhere. “The mentorship program will give anyone who lives in a remote area an additional resource and community that is usually only available to indexers in well-populated areas.”

“This program is a great achievement,” says Siusan Moffat, ISC/SCI executive member. Christian adds, “We had a lively discussion in the online forums on the need for mentoring in our industry. The timing couldn’t be better.”

The program is named after ISC/SCI member Mary Newberry in recognition of her many years of mentorship and teaching.
