Mary Newberry Editorial Services

Since 2000, after completing a BA in political science and literary studies and an MA in English and many years running my own and other people’s businesses, I have worked full time as an indexer, editor and teacher. My projects vary in size and scope. I do back-of-the book indexes for individual authors, large collaborative projects, such as the indexing of the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions Residential Schools Report, and, for ten years, I was team leader for a multi-year indexing and editing contract for the Alberta government. Until 2021, I taught indexing online in a course I developed for Ryerson’s Publishing Program.

Projects of social justice and diversity are of particular interest to me.

My work as an editor and my thorough understanding of the publishing process, provide added value to an indexing project. In 2016, I won the Ewart-Daveluy Award for excellence in indexing and, for a bit of fun, in February 2021, Nigel Beale interviewed me for his Biblio File podcast, “Mary Newberry on the Joys of Indexing. Yes, Indexing.”
