Pointing to the Future: Indexing in the Digital Age
The Indexing Society of Canada’s 2012 conference, held in Ottawa May 31 and June 1, 2012, was a brilliant success. From keynote speaker Jan Wright’s overview of indexes in a digital world to the Canadian launch of Noeline Bridge’s book, Indexing Names, the conference informed, stimulated, charmed and entertained attendees.
Jan Wright kicked off the conference with a keynote address on e-book indexes. Jan won the H.W. Wilson Award for her index to Real World InDesign CS3, the first technical manual to win the prestigious award. She is now working with the International Digital Publishing Forum on behalf of the American Society for Indexing (ASI) to develop index standards for EPUB 3.0.
Other stellar speakers included Noeline Bridge on names, Michèle Hudon on the new ISO standard for thesaurus construction, Katherine Kasirer on indexing National Film Board images, Cheryl Landes on the future of indexing, Max McMaster on indexing a new edition of a work, Elaine Ménard on bilingual taxonomies, David Ream on ASI’s Digital Trends Task Force, and Marion Soublière on winning government of Canada contracts. Jan Wright and David Ream held a hands-on session on e-book indexes, and there was also an international panel discussion on indexing awards.
