INDEX-S provides reliable indexing services to authors and publishing agencies. Sole proprietor, Barbara Cuerden holds a Master’s degree in Educational Research (2010) with a focus on society, culture and literacy. Barbara is a member of the Indexing Society of Canada (ISC) and has served as the ISC Representative for the Eastern Region of Canada. She also has degrees in studio-based art practices and art history, as well as a minor in English literature.

Since reading Elements of Indigenous Style (Gregory Younging, 2018) I’ve been learning about indexing practices that more clearly reflect the voices of Indigenous authors. Breathing fresh air into cultural dead ends, Indigenous voices are crucial to dismantling the ongoing abuses generated by colonialism.

To name a few of the resources that inspire me: Lee Maracle’s My Conversations with Canadians; Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass; Bob Joseph’s Indigenous Relations; Thomas King’s The Inconvenient Indian. I’m a big fan of Billy-Ray Belcourt’s simply amazing writing, most lately, A Minor Chorus (2022). My reading for a Master’s degree in Education in the early 2000’s, included Unlearning the Language of Conquest: Scholars Expose Anti-Indianism in America (2006) which changed my perceptions about western education. I continue to learn from Indigenous writing and research, working to align indexing practices with emerging voices.
